Poker terminology
Here are just a few of the poker terms used. There are still many others that you
might learn while sitting around a poker table or playing online.
Kicker card
If two players have exactly the same hand then the money in the pot
will be split between them. If however they have the same pair, two pair or three
of a kind. For example they both have a pair of Aces then the next card will determine
who the winner is. Who ever has the highest card other than the pair of Aces will
take the pot. This card is known as the kicker card.
All-in
If someone bets all the money they have then they say that they are all
in. This is mostly done in no-limit games
Double belly buster
When a player has a straight draw (needs one card to make
a straight) and there are two possibilities and both cards is in the middle of the
straight. For example in Texas Hold’em the player is holding 10,J and the first
four cards on the board is 7,8,K,A then if the following card was a 9 he would have
a straight 7,8,9,10,J and if the following card was a Q he would have a straight
10,J,Q,K,A. This kind of draw is known as a double belly buster.
Open ended straight draw
If the player has a straight draw and the he can get
one of two cards to make a straight. The cards being on either side of the four
cards he already has to make a straight. E.g. the player has 5, 6, in his hand and
7, 8 are on the board he now needs either a 4 or a 9 to complete his straight. The
4 making the lower straight and the 9 the higher straight.
Double bluffing
When someone puts in a bet as a bluff and is then raised by his
opponent who in turn is also bluffing. This is known as double bluffing. |

Muck
When a player mucks his cards, he throws them away without showing them to
anyone. Also, the muck refers to the pile of cards that contains all the cards that
have been discarded during the game.
The nuts
Refers to the best hand possible taking into account the communal cards.
There is no other hand that can beat this hand. For example in Texas Hold’em if
the board is 7c,9d,10h,5c,Ks the best possible hand that could be held by a player
would be J,Q which would give him the highest hand possible on this board. 9, 10,
J, Q, K. This is known as the nuts. Obviously it varies from hand to hand.
Under the gun
A player is generally referred to as under the gun when he is the
first player to act. So he would be sitting to the left of the big blind. The
The Wheel
Refers to the lowest straight possible in poker, A, 2,3,4,5.
