Superstitions
Having been involved in the gambling community for some time, I always find it entertaining
to see the gambling superstitions that some of the gamblers have. I am sure that gambling
and superstitions have been connected for as long as both of them has existed.
For example a very popular poker tournament here in Africa was scheduled to host
their 13th tournament. But because of all the stigma attached to unlucky nr 13 they
just decided that the 13th tournament would not exist and it would be called the
14th tournament. As they feared that some players might not play because it was
nr 13.
But anyway I thought I would let you in on a couple of general superstitions that
gamblers cherish. So here we go….
Most gamblers believe in lucky items, for example clothing, they often have lucky
shirts, pants, caps or even underwear.
Some believe that no one must touch their chips except them as this will bring them
bad luck.
A lot of players luck is often blamed on the dealer. Players believe that certain
dealers are lucky for them and others aren’t. If the dealer is friendly you are
more likely to win. Of course the dealers have no control over the cards unless
they are cheating somehow.
Gamblers also believe in the general bad luck stories, like walking under ladders,
breaking a mirror or a black cat crossing your path.
There is also such a thing as beginners luck. Generally if you don’t know how a
game works or it is the first time you are playing, it is believed that you will
win.

Gentleman also believes that having a beautiful lady stand beside or behind them
will bring them luck.
Having a rabbits foot or a horseshoe is also considered to be lucky.
There are a lot of things that according to belief will bring good or bad luck,
if you are a strong believer in superstitions it could get difficult to keep track
of all of them. So all I can say is Good Luck, I hope you don’t break a mirror today.
