As far as cities go Las Vegas is still relatively new in the world but has made
a mark on the gambling industry like no other. Las Vegas is a spanish phrase which
means "The Meadows". It remained undiscovered for a very long time since it was
surrounded by a dessert that people were scared to venture into not knowing whether
they would ever find water in the harsh surroundings. The first Non-Indian person
to discover the lush valley in the middle of the dessert was Rafael Rivera in 1829.
The discovery of this oasis reduced the travelling time of the spanish route to
Los Angelas by a couple of days. |

In 1855 mormom misionaries came to settle and build a fort in Las Vegas as it was
in the middle of Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.
In 1864 Nevada becomes the 36th state of the United States of America. In 1905 Las
Vegas becomes a city.
In 1931 the construction of the Hoover dam starts bringing a big group of people
to the city for employment, obviously increasing the Las Vegas population dramatically.
And just as importantly in march of this year gambling is legalised opening the
door for the city to become what it is today. In 1935 the building of the Hoover
dam is completed. Then in the 1940's during WWII the military gets settled there
as it is a remote location with water and electricity. After the war many resorts
and luxurious hotels was built here. And as they say "the rest is Las Vegas history". Las
Vegas has now developed into the Entertainment capital of the world. Being reffered
to as sin city. THe major source of income and Job creation being the tourism industry. |
