As far as cities go Las Vegas is still relatively new in the world but has made a mark on the gambling industry like no other. Las Vegas is a spanish phrase which means "The Meadows". It remained undiscovered for a very long time since it was surrounded by a dessert that people were scared to venture into not knowing whether they would ever find water in the harsh surroundings. The first Non-Indian person to discover the lush valley in the middle of the dessert was Rafael Rivera in 1829. The discovery of this oasis reduced the travelling time of the spanish route to Los Angelas by a couple of days.
